Like many people out there, your main source of traffic via search engines is Google. Everyone is trying to optimize their site to Google can find it.
Google also makes it harder and harder for smaller sites to catch a break between the big boys in the business. Is this a bad thing? Not always but it makes it hard for genuine websites which have a good content base to show in the rankings.
Since Google is market leader in the field of search:
You might also want to submit your websites to Yahoo and Bing just to get that extra traffic in. Google is updating their algorithm on a frequent basis so this can keep you busy.
Recently I added a niche site to Yahoo and Bing since I wasn’t getting a lot of traffic. The keyword is not that competitive but it also isn’t very popular (hence Niche website). Not long after I did that the following happened:
My traffic went up quite significantly (50% ) when I submitted the sites to the other search engines.
Google became search engine referrer number 3… after Yahoo and Bing…
Now I’m not saying it will move heaven and earth and will skyrocket your rankings but if you are trying to hard for those extra visitors from Google, why not have them come in via a different search engine. Since my site was / is a very small one and very niche orientated every visitor counts.
Submit your site to Bing here (and go to the bottom of the page)
Submit your site to Yahoo here (follow the link)
I hope this helps you along the way.
Ralph

Is submitting really necessarily? I though once you get indexed in Google you will eventually get indexed also in Bing and yahoo. I sometimes go listed in yahoo before I got indexed in Google. Bing was always slow though, really slow…

That is the thing, I didn’t think you would either. But ever since I submitted it to the engines I see an increase in traffic from Bing and Yahoo.. which there wasn’t before. Can I certainly say that it will happen automatically, not really. I guess every bit helps in this case
Hey Ralph,
well my website is in Infancy but I strongly agree to your post that submitting your website to other search engines like yahoo and bing also helps.
For a website owner traffic from any source is important rather where it is coming from.
