Some of you might know Facebook, you know, big social network with about 500 million + people connected to it.
Although Facebook is well known across the world, there are other social networks which have a large amount of people connected to it. One of the social networks for instance is Hyves. Others are Orkut, Bebo but Hyves is the one I am most familiar with as it is a Dutch company. www.ralphkooi.hyves.nl if you want to have a look.
Anyway, Facebook is also on the rise in The Netherlands, slowly gaining momentum but still has a tough competitor in Hyves. Hyves is a very interesting company as they recently jumped on the mobile bandwagon. Hyves, just like Facebook has millions of pageviews every day with their mobile application. Mobile is still an area where growth is possible.
Since Facebook is on the rise but lacks the localization that Hvyes has it should be an interesting battle for the (mobile) sky. Where Hyves is able to quickly combine forces with local providers Facebook has the potential to swoop in with larger force. But this is just Facebook versus Hyves, there are the others I talked about earlier who still have large amounts of people connected to their site and will no doubt feel Facebook’s presence.
In the same mobile sphere Facebook does has two aces up their sleeves. One starts with their “Like” button. Its seems very simple but with a network of 500 million people the data you “like” is becoming very valuable. The other ace is that Facebook, unlike Hyves, Bebo and Orkut have the global adopted FacebookConnect button (also the Facebook Login) which is another reason for people to use Facebook more frequent as it its easy to use and you don’t have to fill in your information over and over again.
This is giving Facebook a great solid foundation for future well, globalization or world domination for the lack of better words. The upcoming year(s) or so will be a very interesting year in the mobile field but also the face-off between social media networks.
